Coaching Tip

Developing mental toughness in athletes is less about physically torturing them, and more about helping them understand these two things:

  1. There is going to be some pain involved in a sport like this. The difficult practices, tough losses, weight cutting, etc., are physically/emotionally/mentally demanding. Accept it, don’t fight it.
  2. True mental toughness has more to do with REFUSING to have an emotional reaction to the work and/or temporary pain involved, and less to do with how many miles coach made me run.
