» What is Foundation Wrestling?

Wrestling Taught. Wrestling Simplified.

Foundation Wrestling is a training and teaching system developed by Nick Purler (former All-American for Oklahoma State University) in order to more effectively train his students at the various Purler Wrestling Academies throughout the nation.  All PWA students practice year-round under this comprehensive and methodical approach to the sport of wrestling.  Position, mental preparation, strategy, technique, practice plans - no stone is left unturned.  Nick Purler has designed a consistent approach for everything, ranging from how to talk to students, how to coach mat side, how to teach wrestling techniques, how to manage the workout room, how to drill the students, etc.  This later became known as FOUNDATION WRESTLING, and his ground-breaking instructional DVD's are sold all over the USA as well as overseas.  Many leaders in the wrestling industry will tell you that FOUNDATION WRESTLING is the best instructional product ever produced for the sport of wresting.  The results speak for themselves. Since opening its doors in 1999, PWA students have been winning every major wrestling award on the age-group national level and PWA high school students have been earning college wrestling scholarships at an accelerated rate with many Freshman state champs and Cadet / Junior National All-Americans each year.

A Comprehensive Approach to the Sport of Wrestling

Foundation Wrestling recognizes the importance of having a wrestling training system-  an organized plan to follow with tactics that are tried and tested. Through experience, these tactics have been honed, and molded into a working routine. Successful wrestling depends on much more than knowing a bunch of moves.  In fact, as you will discover, success on a high level often times has little to do with which wrestler knows more moves.  The four pillars to successful wrestling are as follows. in this order:

  1. Mental approach to competition - It has often been said that wrestling is 90% mental, but only a handful have taken the time or figured out how to teach their wrestlers to perform.  If you wrestle better in practice than you do in matches, then FOUNDATION WRESTLING is for you.  You will learn an easy to follow, simplified nuts and bolts strategy to mental training and coping strategies that will enable you to 'let go' and wrestle to win.instead of wrestling 'not to lose'.  Nick Purler has diagnosed THREE areas / obstacles that hinder the performance of all wrestlers.  We will teach you strategies on how to clear these hurdles by a) dealing with your fear of losing - letting go, (b) defining success - focusing on the HOW instead of the outcome, and(c) making a decision to win!

  2. Positioning - We have all been to countless camps and practices in which we are told that positioning is more important than moves - but nothing follows those words except for a bunch of moves. The Foundation Wrestling System teaches the actual details and technique of solid positioning in an easy to understand and highly effective way.  The students of Purler Wrestling are hammered weekly in this area and are very effective with shutting down their opponent's offense with these positioning components.  If you have ever watched high-level NCAA or Olympic wrestling, you have probably noticed how low-scoring the matches are. Why? These wrestlers know every move in the book! In truth, the reason these matches are so low-scoring has nothing to do with their lack of wrestling moves, but more to do with their opponent's SOLID positioning skills and ability to shut down their opponent's offense.  Learning proper positioning / wrestling form can be made simple.  However, it is a skill that must be developed and reinforced over time.

  3. Hand-fighting - Foundation Wrestling teaches that there are 5 key ways to break your opponent's stance to set up scoring opportunities.  They are: Push / Pull / Hit / Pick / Pass.  Simply stated, being aggressive means ATTACKING YOUR OPPONENT'S STANCE.NOT SHOOTING.  In baseball, we learn to 'be patient,' 'wait for a good pitch' and to 'take our time'.  Not so in wrestling, we have been taught to shoot constantly, which leads to sloppy wrestling and unsuccessful wrestling.  Unsuccessful wrestling leads to burnout.  Bottom line.  Foundation Wrestling teaches you to attack your opponent's stance, and you will learn to score against the very best. A top-level opponent is not going to break his stance for you.THAT IS YOUR JOB.  If your wrestling seems to hit the wall in big matches, you likely are lacking hand fighting skills .  We will teach you to 'wear and tear' on your opponent and to identify the right opportunities to attack.

  4. Technique - Foundation Wrestling teaches CORE techniques in CORE areas of wrestling.  Your goal is to win quickly.  Instead of serially demonstrating wrestling moves with no rhyme or reason, Foundation Wrestling focuses you as a coach and wrestler on what actually works - i.e. efficient technique from the most common wrestling positions!:
    1. Leg Attacks : Not just the same old shots.  Foundation Wrestling teaches multiple set-ups to each leg-attack and how to actually SCORE against a high level opponent once you get there!
    2. Secondary offense (scoring without shooting): possibly the most overlooked area of wrestling at the age-group and high school levels.
    3. Front headlock offense and defense : hands-down, the quickest way to add wins to your season.
    4. Riding and turning (leg-riding, bars and tilts) : Purler Wrestling Academy students are notorious for absolutely brutal leg-riding and tilts.
    5. Bottom : Foundation Wrestling teaches several ways of getting off bottom and most importantly WHEN to make your move off bottom.  As you will learn, standing up on the whistle can be very dangerous and attacking hand-control can be as well.  Working your way out is how you escape - we will show you how.   If you are afraid to pick bottom, then FOUNDATION WRESTLING is for you.

Just as in weight training, in which 85% of your strength will come from just 5-6 lifts, winning in wrestling comes from a handful of techniques in each CORE area of wrestling.  Foundation Wrestling lays it all out for you.  We will teach you each skill 'in steps' so that you can easily learn and easily teach each skill in an efficient manner.
