» Coaching Staff

We (David and Phil Nowick) were born coaches.  We had our first jobs coaching wrestling when we were only sophomores in high school!! We prefer to consider ourselves wrestling teachers rather than wrestling coaches. We have spent our lives as students of the sport of wrestling, constantly seeking out the best techniques and training methods.  Along the way, we have been privileged enough to learn from some of the all-time great wrestlers such as Dave Schultz, David Lee, Barry Davis and Sergei Beloglazov to name a few.  However, from a coaching standpoint, nothing has exerted more influence over our teaching methods than Nick Purler's Foundation wrestling system.  We have a combined 50 years of experience in the sport and have been confronted with virtually every conceivable situation. We also bring some perspective to the process.  Each of us has matched our wrestling achievements both academically and professionally. In sum, we have learned how to do things the right way and how to enjoy the journey.  We look forward to developing new wrestling friendships and helping you do the same.

Phil Nowick

Phil Nowick closed out his career in at Cherry Creek High school in Colorado in the top three on the all-time win list with 114 varsity victories.  He placed four times at the CHSAA State Tournament - twice reaching the state finals.  Phil went on to wrestle initially for the University of Michigan and then for Stanford University.  At Stanford, Phil was a three year NCAA Division I starter at 118 pounds.  Phil earned his bachelor's degree in Economics and subsequently earned both a law degree and MBA from the University of Georgia.  Phil had a highly successful career in finance, working on Wall Street and in Colorado for 12 years.   In October of 2008, Phil was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and successfully defeated the disease (by technical fall!) in May of 2009.  Phil now focuses on one of his true passions in life: training wrestlers and other individuals to reach their peak potential.  In addition to his top-flight wrestling instruction and extensive training in Foundation Wrestling techniques, Phil is a fast becoming one of Colorado's top core-training and kettlebell instructors.

Dave Nowick

Dave Nowick completed his high school wrestling career in Colorado with two state medals (once placing in the State Tournament with a shattered tibia/fibula).  At Stanford, David was a four year NCAA Division I starter and a two time placer in the Pac-10 tournament.  Dave was a four time University Nationals Placer in Greco Roman and a University National Champion in 1992. After college, Dave trained full time in Greco Roman wrestling.  His postgraduate career was highlighted by two places in the U.S. Open Nationals (5 th , 8 th ) and a top seven finish in the 1996 Final Olympic Trials..all while in medical school!!  After an eight year hiatus from competition, Dave returned to win 5 Veteran's National Championships (3 Greco Roman, 2 Freestyle) from 2005-2007.

Dave earned his bachelor's degree in Biology at Stanford University and his medical doctorate from the University of Colorado. He is currently a doctor and board certified anesthesiologist.

Dave's true passion also lies in coaching. Dave's coaching background is diverse, including influence from some of America's greatest wrestlers and the Russian wrestling system. The Foundation Wrestling System has been the perfect platform for Dave to focus his enthusiasm for teaching wrestling.
