» About PWA Rocky

Who are We?

We are an open-enrollment, year-round wrestling academy with a single goal: helping wrestlers dramatically improve their results. We are a supplementary wrestling program that is designed to work alongside your high school or club program.  We offer a national travelling team but do not compete as a team within the State of Colorado.

At PWA Rocky, we utilize a high-level curriculum known as the Foundation Wrestling System.  We give our wrestlers (and parents) a focused game plan each week that allows them to make the best use of their training time.   How much time and money have you spent driving to practices and tournaments in which you (or your son's) wrestling did not improve one bit?

At PWA we do not believe in idle mat time. Every second of training counts. We require our wrestlers to set goals each week designed to develop specific technical aspects of their wrestling. Using the PWA Rocky Game Plan, every single practice, live wrestling session or wrestling match that you attend will present itself as an opportunity to get better.  Each practice is a progression from the prior that will culminate in an optimal performance at the most important competitions of the year. Thus, consistency and commitment are a must.

You will find out very quickly upon joining PWA Rocky that the difference is not in what we teach - we did not invent wrestling -   but how we teach it.  We utilize Nick Purler's Foundation Wrestling system, which breaks down each and every move down into simple steps and proper body mechanics (much like an elite-level golf instructor would break down the components of a perfect golf swing).  This methodology makes the learning process much faster and easier. It allows coaches (and parents) to troubleshoot issues immediately.

Finally, we emphasize (in both wrestlers and parents) taking the right mental approach to the sport of wrestling.  Our sport must be viewed with a wide angle lens.  Wrestling is a tough sport. Our athletes will quite naturally experience periods filled with setbacks, frustration and pain. These rigors will eat you alive if you let them. With the right guidance, wrestling can be fun even during the more difficult times. We have been there and will be there with you every step of the way.

At PWA Rocky, we recognize the critical importance of a stable training environment, focused drilling and repetition in generating elite-level wrestlers.  We find that many wrestlers that come through our doors have not only been improperly instructed, but OVER-instructed. They have spent very little time drilling in their careers. (Can you imagine trying to be a successful baseball player without ever going to the batting cages and working on your swing? How about trying to be a top-flight golfer without going to the driving range or trying to be a successful basketball player without shooting thousands of free throws?) We fix this problem immediately by demanding that our wrestlers practice each of our techniques perfectly thousands of times during a given year, both in our practices and on their own.   Proper instruction and repetition are built into the plan.  That's why we get results. Simply stated...the approach we take a PWA is to under-teach and over-drill.

We have always believed that, in any life endeavor, the quickest way to being successful is to first seek out others that have already achieved and to simply do what they are doing!   On that note, all PWA Rocky wrestlers are offered the opportunity to compete for Purler Wrestling Academy - the most successful age-group wrestling team in the country - at national events .  Dave Nowick, Phil Nowick, Nick Purler and Tony Purler, along with several other coaches trained in the Foundation Wrestling system will all be in your corner.  You will have the opportunity to meet and interface with some of the top wrestlers in the nation from Missouri, Iowa and Illinois.
