PWA Elite

What is Purler Wrestling Academy Elite?

PWA Elite is a year-round training program offered to the most dedicated and involved PWA students. If you are new to PWA and have interest in getting involved in our Elite program, you will need to put in a minimum of 8-12 full months of training at a PWA site so that you can get the core drills and routines down.....basically learning our system. If you are a very dedicated worker in the practice room, display the maturity and mental toughness necessary, have the desire to become a top performer on the wrestling mat, and are ready to make the year-round committment to our Thursday practices, you can email Nick about your plans and see if he thinks you are ready.
- I obviously have the final say and with over 30 years of wrestling experience, can and will certainly do what is best for you (or your son) and the PWA program. High School athletes, being older, will have a more lenient set of criteria as will all new PWA wrestlers that have a wealth of wrestling experience upon joining PWA. Although, in most cases, new Elite members will most likely be assigned some private lessons for the final polishing necessary to step into this room.

Practice times, location and pricing?

Workouts are held on Thursdays @ Francis Howell High School from 6:15-9:00 pm. Cost is $135.00 per month and all Elite members are encouraged to also attend another PWA night of their choice FREE of charge if they are interested in more mat time. However, the Thursday practice should only be missed in cases of unavoidable circumstances. It is mandatory that all Elite members be on the mat a minumum of 11 months of the year and if you do decide to take a 1 month break, the tuition of $135 is still due. PWA Elite tuition is to be made via direct withdrawal and all members can sign up for that payment place below. NO checks will be collected at practice on Elite nights.

What is the difference between PWA and PWA Elite?

Basically, PWA is an open-enrollment program and PWA Elite is not. With PWA, over the course of the 12 month training cycle, all students are ran through the CORE techniques, skills, and also learn the 'tricks of the trade' for becoming a great wrestler. We will be on an area (wrestling position) for approximately 3-5 practices and then move on to a new area until we rotate through the PWA System...which takes a full year. We will learn the top 3-4 techniques from that common wrestling position and absolutely drill the tar out of the kids in this area...so that they master the position and the techniques shown. However, we must move on to new areas and leave that past position behind as we will no doubt have new kids joining each month that did not study the position...which makes the constant reveiw very defficult. There is a constant 'moving forward' with PWA while the PWA Elite room, being made up only of kids that know ALL of the PWA System, will engage in much more review and re-drilling of the core PWA System. The Elite wrestlers will also spend time each month studying the 'second-layer' of wresting skills and techniques that may be outside what I call the 'Foundation' of wrestling skills, but still very necessary for those who plan to compete in college wrestling one day. In a nutshell, the Elite kids drill and re-drill what the PWA kids are in the process of learning and then get to study new areas of wrestling that very few high school and youth kids will ever get to learn. PWA students learn the system a piece at a time, drill it relentlessly for many practice sessions, then move on to another common wrestling position.

Remember, PWA ran for a full 10 years and produced 100's of State Champions and many All-Americans so your son will benefit tremendously by just being a part of PWA. I know that 90% of the points are scored from 10% of the wrestling techniques and mostly from the very COMMON wrestling postions. This FOUNDATION of wrestling skills is still what PWA and PWA Elite is all about and absolutely vital to being successful in wrestling today. Over the course of the year, both groups will hammer these areas and skills.
